Late yesterday the Ontario government extended the Infectious Disease Emergency Leave (“IDEL”), meaning employers don’t need to come to any termination decisions just yet.
Originally slated to end on January 2nd, 2021, the IDEL is now set to end on July 3, 2021. To recap, a non-unionized employee whose employer has temporarily reduced or eliminated their hours of work for reasons related to COVID-19 is deemed to be on a job-protected infectious disease emergency leave. Employees who take infectious disease emergency leave are generally entitled to the same rights as employees who take pregnancy or parental leave.
For more information on this leave, we refer you to our previous e-Alert from September 4th, 2020, found here.
